Helping Children with additional needs to learn through stories
Morley’s Noah’s Ark Toy Library will re-commence ‘Story Time’ on Tuesday 2nd February 2016. During 2016 Noah’s Ark will be offering two Story Time Play and Learning sessions each week during school term time for pre-school aged members and their parents
Facilitated by Early Childhood Teacher and Noah’s Ark Team Leader, Susan Glasson, and Occupational Therapist, Shirley McInnes, Story Time includes a story, followed by fine and gross motor activities and learning opportunities suited to the children’s needs and interests.
As well as connecting families and being a bit of fun, the sessions promote invaluable skills such as listening and concentration for the children; language development strategies to encourage communication; socialisation; activity ideas; and child development and local resource information for parents.
Tuesday mornings is best suited to the older and more active children, providing a more structured setting with a greater focus on language and pre-school activities.
While the themes of Story Time will change each week, the one consistency will be ‘Hoppy’, a rabbit puppet, who will encourage the children to communicate in a range of ways.
Susan, who has more than 20 years experience working in services for children, said the role of language and literacy in every child’s development is important.
"All children, including those who may not be able to speak, benefit from exposure to books and reading to help them develop their understanding of concepts and the place of words in communication."
"The wonderful experience of sharing a story provides meaningful interactions between the child, their parents, the story teller and other children in the room. It also helps children make connections between their own experiences and what happens in the story."
"We hope many families will join us at the Library for these great Play and Learning Story Time sessions."
